Join us at the beach again this year for our annual Summer Conference!

This year, we explore what it means to have a Growth Mindset, and how to empower yourself by using the word “yet” when facing challenges. Building on the work of Carol Dweck, Ph.D., we’ll learn about Growth Mindsets vs. Fixed Mindsets. How can Growth Mindset help us excel in our careers and help students embrace challenges? Our afternoon speaker will help us apply what we’ve learned to issues of Intersectionality and Inclusion. You will come away with new tools for positive growth in your careers and personal life.

Jil Freeman
Growth Mindset

Jil Freeman is the Department Chair of the Instructional Support & Professional Development Department at Clackamas Community College, where she develops and implements professional development related to teaching and learning.

Prior to joining CCC, she was the program director for the AmeriCorps VISTA college instruction program at Education Northwest, a nonprofit education organization located in Portland, Oregon. Jil’s career in higher education began teaching classes in media studies and communication as a full-time faculty member in the Department of Communication at Portland State University where she was twice awarded the John Eliot Allen Teacher of the Year Award.

In her spare time, Jil likes to cook, tap dance and talks to a very sassy dog named Lucy (who is not very impressed by the cooking or tap dancing).

Rut Martinez-Alicea
Intersectionality & Inclusion, 2-3pm

Rut R. Martinez-Alicea, a native of Puerto Rico, has over 20 years of experience in developing and facilitating training programs. She is currently the Coordinator of The Multicultural Center at Portland Community College Southeast Campus and operates her own business providing consultation and training. Through diverse modalities, she develops and facilitates training for multiple learning styles and abilities, in English and in Spanish. Her areas of practice are oppression, racism, intercultural competence, communication and group facilitation skills, leadership development, and domestic and sexual violence (DSV). Her work on behalf of DSV survivors includes the design and implementation of the first 24 hr. statewide Spanish crisis line in Oregon: Línea UNICA at El Programa Hispano, as well as the design and implementation of the first program for the primary prevention of rape at a community college in the US at Portland Community College. Ms. Martinez-Alicea has an undergraduate degree in psychology with a minor in Fine Arts from Universidad de Puerto Rico with a focus on power dynamics and a minor in fine arts. She has continued her graduate studies at Illinois State University, Marylhurst University, and Portland State University in training and development, in addition to art therapy.
